August Trailblazer: Meet Mia Silverman

August Trailblazer: How Mia Silverman Is Changing the Conversation Around Food Allergies

For many people, food allergies are thought of as a list of foods to avoid. For Mia Silverman, they’re something much deeper: a lived experience that has shaped her purpose, her career, and the community she’s building every day.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce Mia as our August Equal Eats Trailblazer. Watch our full interview with her!

A food allergy advocate, content creator behind @allergieswithmia, podcast host, and graduate student in psychology, Mia has dedicated her platform to helping people with food allergies feel seen, supported, and empowered. Her work goes far beyond sharing allergy-friendly tips- she’s helping reshape how we talk about the emotional realities of living with food allergies.

Growing Up with Complex Food Allergies

Mia’s journey with food allergies began almost from birth.

After experiencing colic as an infant, she had a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction at just two years old after eating a cookie containing pistachios. Since then, her allergy journey has remained anything but straightforward. Today, she manages an extensive list of food allergies, including most tree nuts, many seeds, dairy, eggs, seafood, and several fruits.

What makes Mia’s story especially unique is how unpredictable some of her allergies have been. Her dairy allergy, for example, has come and gone multiple times throughout her life - a reminder that food allergies aren’t always static.

But beyond the medical challenges were the emotional ones.

As a teenager, Mia experienced bullying because of her allergies. Classmates made jokes, read her allergy list aloud, and treated something deeply personal as entertainment. Those experiences had a lasting impact on her mental health and planted the seeds for the work she would eventually pursue.

An Accidental Advocate

Mia never set out to become a content creator.

It all started with one TikTok.

She posted a video about living with her extensive food allergies, expecting very little. Instead, it exploded, reaching nearly a million views overnight. Suddenly, thousands of people with food allergies - or parents raising children with them - were reaching out to say they finally felt understood.

That unexpected moment became the beginning of a thriving online community.

Today, Mia creates content that shows what’s possible while living with food allergies. Whether she’s navigating restaurants, sharing everyday experiences, or talking openly about anxiety, she reminds her audience that food allergies don’t have to define the limits of their lives.

Bringing Mental Health Into the Conversation

While many allergy advocates focus on food safety, Mia has chosen another equally important topic: mental health.

She’s currently pursuing graduate studies in psychology with the goal of becoming a clinical psychologist specializing in food allergy care.

Her mission is rooted in something she knows firsthand.

Living with food allergies can involve anxiety, trauma, hyper-vigilance, and a loss of trust in your own body. Yet these emotional experiences are often overlooked in traditional allergy care.

To help fill that gap, Mia launched her podcast, The Food Allergy Brain, where she explores the psychological side of living with food allergies alongside practical advice and personal stories.

She’s particularly interested in expanding research around adult food allergies, oral immunotherapy, and the long-term emotional effects of anaphylaxis - areas where she believes more support and understanding are desperately needed.

Showing That Travel Is Possible

This August, Mia will be putting Equal Eats cards to work during an exciting adventure: traveling through the Netherlands.

Traveling internationally with food allergies can feel overwhelming, especially when language barriers make communicating allergens even more difficult.

Throughout her trip, Mia will share how she uses Equal Eats translation cards to navigate restaurants with confidence, communicate her allergies clearly, and spend less time worrying - and more time enjoying the experience.

Her goal isn’t just to show how the cards work.

It’s to remind others that travel is still possible with food allergies.

With the right preparation and tools, the world becomes a lot more accessible.
