Food Allergens around the World
Did you know that the "top" allergens change from country to country?

If you are in the U.S., you are very aware of the "top 9" food allergens (sesame most recently being added).

The Top 9 Allergens in the United States

  • Peanut
  • Tree nuts
  • Egg
  • Milk
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Sesame
However, a short trip to the north will bring about 10 priority allergens in Canada.
In the European Union, there are 14 priority allergens to be aware of.

What do "top allergens" mean?

It can be different from country to country, but generally it means that these allergens receive special treatment in terms of product labelling standards. What this special treatment looks like, is dependent on the country.

How to find "top allergens" in every country

There is yet to be a comprehensive resource that shows the exact labelling guidelines for all countries, however we have found an excellent website that shows the priority allergens on a global scale.
It has been put together by the research team at the University of Nebraska in the Food Allergy Research and Resource Program (FARRP). Simply click on a country, or allergen, and find out where it is considered a priority allergen.
