Greece, Glorious Food, and a Wedding to Remember

Greece, Glorious Food, and a Wedding to Remember 🇬🇷

Some places sit on your dream travel list for years. You imagine the scenery, the atmosphere, the food, and what it might feel like to finally get there.

For me, Greece was one of those places.

And somehow, the reality was even more special than I'd imagined.

Finally, Greece!

There was something wonderful about arriving in a country I'd wanted to visit for so long. The coastline, the colours, the warmth, and those picture-perfect views all felt a little surreal.

But beyond the beauty of Greece itself, there was another reason I felt grateful to be there.

I was travelling within the European Union, where food businesses are required to provide information about 14 regulated allergens.

As someone who travels with food allergies, that matters a lot to me. I love consistency. Eating in an unfamiliar place often means extra questions, research, and uncertainty. Knowing there are established allergen information requirements offered a helpful starting point for conversations about ingredients.

Of course, allergen information alone doesn't guarantee a meal is safe for me. I still need to ask questions and assess the answers. But having that expectation of transparency made the trip feel that little bit easier.

Greek Food, and the Joy of Not Missing Out

Let's talk about the food, because it was a genuine highlight.

Many of the Greek dishes we encountered were wonderfully meat-centric, which happened to suit my dietary needs particularly well. For once, I didn't feel as though I was standing on the sidelines while everyone else experienced the local cuisine.

I could enjoy the flavours of Greece rather than miss out on them.

There were delicious meals, beautiful settings, and, naturally, some very lovely table wine. I was able to relax and appreciate the food in a way that isn't always possible when I travel.

People sometimes forget that food is such a big part of discovering a country. When allergies limit what you can try, it can feel as if you're missing part of the experience.

Greece was different for me, and I savoured every moment. I'm already planning future Grece trips because of this!

A Beachside Wedding Straight Out of a Dream

As if the trip wasn't special enough, my partner and I were invited to perform at a beachside wedding.

Yes, really!

We had the chance to sing and play several of our favourite love songs, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, with the sea as our backdrop.

It was one of those moments when you look around and think, "How lucky are we to be here?"

Sharing music at such a beautiful celebration of someone's biggest "life moment" was a memory we'll carry for a lifetime.

There is something magical about the way songs can bring you straight back to a place. I already know that hearing those songs again will remind me of that beautiful Greek coastline and a day full of love.

A Nut-Free Reception and a Table Full of Understanding

Then came another unexpected highlight: the wedding reception.

The bride and groom had gone to the trouble of organizing an entirely nut-free celebration because several guests had allergies.

I was genuinely amazed by the thought and care that had gone into it.

Being considered and included before I even sat down to eat felt incredibly special.

And then I found myself sitting across from someone with severe food allergies.

We got talking about epinephrine, allergic reactions, gaps in awareness, and all the little details that are instantly familiar to people who live with this every day.

I had found my people!

It's such a lovely feeling to talk with someone who just gets it. No need to explain why you ask so many questions or why a reassuring conversation with restaurant staff can mean so much.

Just instant understanding, and plenty to talk about.

The One Thing That Could Have Made It Even Better

While I really appreciated the effort behind the nut-free reception, I would have welcomed a little more reassurance from the wait staff on the day.

Much of my confidence came from trusting the preparations the couple had arranged and their first hand vetting of menu items. That's wonderful, but with severe food allergies, it also helps to hear clear, informed answers directly from the people serving the food.

Thoughtful planning makes a difference, and confident communication at the table matters just as much.

I did feel reassured enough to eat, and I am so glad I did.

Everything was delicious!

It wasn't about expecting perfection. It was about that extra bit of comfort that allows someone with allergies to enjoy the occasion as fully as everyone else.

Plates Were Smashed, Memories Were Made!

By the end of the trip, we had enjoyed incredible food, beautiful wine, stunning scenery, music, love, and one unforgettable wedding celebration.

And yes, plates were smashed! I don't think I'll be bringing that tradition home with me...

But what stays with me most is how it felt to be part of everything.

I didn't have to watch from the sidelines while everyone else tasted the food or enjoyed the celebration.

I got to experience Greece in all its delicious, beautiful, joyful glory.

For someone used to navigating travel with food allergies, that feeling of inclusion is something truly worth celebrating.

Greece, you were a dream. Opa! 🇬🇷
